Special Meeting for Members & Guests
"Listening as an Ethical Skill"
This Sunday's program will be about listening as an ethical skill. You will receive
practical tips for those times you want your listening to be really useful to the person who is sharing
something with you. Around this core of "training" in listening, you will hear about a new strategy of
growth for the Society.
A tree adds a "ring of growth" every year. People can do this too, but often don't.
Organizations likewise. The Society's new strategy is to emulate the tree. It's for each
individual member, in his or her own unique way. And it's also for the Society, our public face to the
world.
Many members have already opted to participate in this new strategy. Others are still considering
it. You will have a chance to ask questions and make up your mind. Hope to see you this Sunday!
The general public is invited.

"Gut-Reaction to 'Ethics'"
Close your eyes. Still your mind. Calm your feelings.
Now, what is the first thing that comes into your thoughts or feelings when you hear the word
"ethics"?
Let's be honest with each other. Is it like this: "Ethics? Yippee!" Or is it
more like this: "Ethics? Ugh!"
How does your gut-reaction affect your intention to live ethically? Are you able to go inside and
tease out some connection, even though it's at your gut-level, mostly unconscious?

"Six Sources of Influence"
Last Sunday, Chris Krehmeyer spoke movingly to us about Beyond Housing and its work for
neighborhoods. I asked him how his organization has been able to have such good results when so many
other agencies seem to not be able to make a dent.
His answer was that it's not rocket science. The key is addressing everything in a neighborhood
that needs to be addressed.
It reminded me of the great book Influencer (2009), which explains that sometimes problems are
resolved by simple solutions, but complex and persistent problems only give way when all six sources of
influence on people's behavior are addressed. In fact, when all the influences are addressed, it can be
miraculous what positive change occurs. I'll bring that book and a summary of those six sources and
we'll talk about whatever occurs to us as a result. What persistent problem do you see in the world or
in people's lives that seem to require a "miracle" before there could be positive dramatic change?

Living Ethics Discussion
the topic is:
"Grow or Die?"
I made a statement in my talk Sunday that ethical growth and personal growth are one and the
same thing. How much of an exaggeration is this?
In personal growth, you can't grow all the time. There's a healthy cycle of exerting energy and
then resting, growing and resting. Rest contributes to growth. But how long can the periods of
rest be? How long before rest turns into indolence? How long before rest stops contributing to
growth and starts contributing to deterioration instead?
So, is there a time of "rest" in ethics as well? It makes sense to me that when someone has an
ethical breakthrough of some kind or engages in some courageous ethical act that goes beyond the person's
comfort zone, that person might then need a period of rest. The person might need time to assimilate
the new understanding into his or her life. For how long? I don't know. Maybe as long as it
takes for the person to regain his or her balance, a new balance at a new set-point.
But in life, does personal development have to a permanent thing? After all, a person does age
(look at me!) and perhaps it's true that we reach a "peak" of development. If we develop past maturity,
like a fruit that develops past the point where it is ripe, would we become rotten?
Still, we are beings of the mind. Learning doesn't ever seem to become rotten. Our minds
have an amazing ability to keep changing our whole life. (Google "neuroplasticity".) I'm
inclined to think that if we don't keep growing ethically, we start declining.
What are your thoughts? More important, what are your experiences? Is ethics a growing
thing for you? Even Felix Adler talked about how his wife taught him, years after he had founded the
first Ethical Society, an entirely new meaning of "relationship" which gave him an entirely new understanding
of ethics itself.

Living Ethics Discussion
the topic is:
"Socialism, Capitalism, Religion"
Our Sunday speaker Bob Reinhold gave us a fascinating look at the Scandinavian
countries. He theorizes that they became the most nonauthoritarian socialist countries in the world
because they were so strongly Lutheran in religion. (They're not much religious in any form
nowadays.) From Lutheranism they inherited the view that every person is flawed, that we are all truly
equal where it's most important, and therefore we must take care of each other, with no persons rising above
others to such an extent that they could be tempted to begin to think of themselves as a higher class of
people.
These countries provide unemployed people an income that is a huge 80% of their employed salary, yet
their citizens are just as inventive as Americans, no lazier than Americans, and have enjoyed eras of peace
vs. eras of war to a far greater extent than Americans.
We usually try to keep our discussion away from politics and partisanship, but for this discussion of
the large picture, it will be allowed. The Dylan Ratigan show, on msnbc tv today, actually
raised the ethical question of whether it was time for a revolution in the US. Do Tea Partiers
on the right and Progressives on the left possibly have something in common -- perhaps a sense of a broken
political economy?
The big questions. And then how does each of his maintain his or her own peace of mind and joy in
living?

In her platform address at the Society last Sunday, Rhonda Mills gave practical tips on what

is. It is 1) listening from a space of silence within oneself, 2) a feeling of being
connected with others, and 3) a willingness to be with the unknown.
On this third point, she highly recommended a 20-minute talk by Brene Brown, Ph.D., at this

"Empathy"
Empathy is a foundation for humanity itself. Without it, ethics hardly makes sense.
It is more than something that just happens or not. It can be consciously appreciated and developed in
oneself. Ethically, it is a virtue.
Rhonda Mills, this Sunday's speaker, has come to know empathy as a basic foundation of nonviolent
communication. She is a Certified Trainer with the
Global Center for Nonviolent Communication. She leads public
workshops, trainings, and classes in St. Louis and around the country. She has been facilitating
transformational work for individuals and groups since 2001. Her training is in Nonviolent
Compassionate Communication (NVC), Para Yoga, and Conscious Living and Loving. Of special interest, she
teaches Nonviolent Communication classes for the St. Louis Ethical Society.
In general, Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is described as both a spiritual practice that helps us see
our common humanity and a concrete set of skills that help us to live more peacefully. These skills
apply to thought, language, and a commitment to an ethical use of power. Also known as "Compassionate
Communication", or "Conscious Communication", NVC involves honest expression, listening with
empathy, and developing a more compassionate inner relationship.
A mother of two, Rhonda is passionate about family, community, holistic personal transformation, and
sharing what she has learned to make the world a better place for us all. Her personal vision statement
epitomizes her passion and commitment to NVC: "All people are connected with the life that flows
through them, have support for wholeness and living in harmony with needs, and experience aliveness,
fulfillment, inner freedom, and thriving relationships."

"Reacting to Belief-Based Religious People"
What are our internal emotional reactions when relatives say, regarding someone who has died,
"She's better off now; she has gone to heaven". What are our external reactions?
What other examples of belief-talk really get under your skin?
Is it possible to distinguish between "fanatic believers" and "humane believers"? Is it possible
that when a humane believer says "I believe in the virgin birth", it means something different from what is
meant when a fanatic believer says the exact same words? Are some expressions of faith benign while
other expressions of the same words are malignant? Either way, what is the optimal ethical attitude we
should shoot for?

" Ethics of Happiness"
Have you ever deliberately tried to be happy?
I don't mean tried to have a new TV in order to be happy, or new clothes to be happy, or decreased debt
in order to be happy.
I mean aimed at happiness directly.
My general education informed me that happiness was a byproduct, and that if you aimed directly at
happiness you would not attain it.
Does your experience confirm this or disprove it?
Is it even ethical to try to be happier when so many in the world are suffering?
A further question, is it ethical to stay happy when so many in the world are suffering?
If someone near you comes down with an incurable disease that is debilitating and painful, is there
something wrong with you if you seem happy? Is there a deeper happiness that is compatible with grief?
Is there a deeper happiness that makes possible a deeper, truer grief?
Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.

Sunday Lecture Series
"Raising Ethical Culture ... the Kid"
Our speaker is ESMR Leader Bob Greenwell.
Ethical Culture, or Ethical Humanism as we also call it, is still a child. It needs our
attention and care. While we gain great pleasure from this child, as we would from any child of our own,
it has growing pains and it needs us. I suggest a modest shift in thinking, from Ethical Culture feeding
members to members feeding it. A shift from wondering how I benefit from my membership in Ethical
Culture, to wondering how excited and grateful I can become in my role as part of the generation of people who
bring Ethical Culture to maturity. So is there really a chance? Think of what a mature widespread
Ethical Culture could mean to the world.
Those of you going on the getaway retreat over this weekend may find an occasional moment of quiet, and I
invite you to just ask yourself the question, "How can I help raise the kid?".
In this talk, I will bring to you the insights presented by Alice Mann at the seven-hour workshop I
will be attending on Saturday Oct. 2. It's about growth and development of congregations. I will take
what she says, what empirical evidence there is for revitalizing a community, and mix it with thoughts I have been
gestating based on my experience in Ethical Culture. We can raise it up further, and in doing so raise up
ourselves.
The general public is invited.
