Red Cross Blood Drive

We will be sponsoring a Red Cross Blood Drive from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. instead of our regular meeting.  Childcare will be provided.

The Red Cross is in dire need of blood, and supplies are particularly low in the Fall, right after vacation season.  If you are eligible to give blood, please help us support this worthy cause by making your appointment right away.

An easy online process allows you to make your appointment to donate in just a few minutes.  This link will direct you to the Red Cross site to sign up: SIGN UP

You must pre-register on this givelife.org web site.  An rsvp of Yes here is appreciated, but it does not complete the process.

Following is a short tutorial that walks you through the process of registering and signing up for an appointment to donate- short tutorial

Just a few notes:
1) The blood drive is scheduled for the same weekend as Oktoberfest.  If you're working at our booth there, please remember to coordinate your donor appointment with your shift.

2) If anemia has ever kept you from donating blood, Karen Blessing of the Red Cross suggests that you not drink tea several days in advance of your appointment.  She also suggests Cream of Wheat to bolster your iron levels in preparation for your appointment.

3) We're committed to providing at least 25 successful donors, but if slots fill quickly, the Red Cross will provide additional staff to add more appointments.  Please sign up early so they can plan accordingly, and encourage your friends and family to donate.  They can use this same link to schedule an appointment.

The general public is invited.

Sunday Lecture Series

"White Privilege in a "Post-Racial" Society"

The speaker is our friend Kelli Dornfeld.

Many Americans think that racism is a thing of the past and they look to the fact that we have a black president in the White House as proof that there are no more racial barriers for people of color in the United States.  This is a symptom of "white privilege". Institutional racism and discrimination are still very much a part of American society.  This is not news to people of color but it does surprise much of white America.  Kelli will share how she has come to look differently at race and how this affects her as an educator.

Kelli Dornfeld has been teaching in public school since 1991 and has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, and a Masters of Education degree from National-Louis University in Chicago, IL.  She has been a leader in developing and implementing the Social Justice program at Pattonville High School, has served on the District Multi-Cultural Education Committee as chairperson, and has been working on combating racism in schools for nearly two decades.

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
   "Possible Futures of Ethical Culture"

A few weeks ago, I presented the Platform address given by Marc Bernstein at the Bergen Ethical Society two years ago.  His topic was "Two Possible Futures for Ethical Culture"."  He described the current lack of growth of the movement, then described two alternative futures, depending on whether the movement takes the recommendation of Leader Howard Radest or Leader Les Spetter.

If you want to see the text at the Bergen Society's website, the link is: two-possible-futures-for-ethical-culture

I will also bring the "Talking Points" for the Coalition of Reason.  We and the St. Louis Ethical Society have joined the coalition, and I have been named the media contact person for the group.  So when the CoR makes news, I may get called by someone.  The Talking Points make for an interesting discussion, and are pertinent to our views on the future of our movement.

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
   "Is it ethical to assassinate?"

Of course not?  Of course?  Never?  Sometimes?

With guerrilla warfare and terrorism becoming more prominent, is there a need for an ethics of assassination?

Let's sink our teeth into this question.  It might seem remotely removed from our personal lives, but who is ever completely removed from war, or from threat of war, or from the need to deter war.

Which President issued an executive order to never assassinate?  Has this order been rescinded?

I'll bring an article and a book by Ward Thomas, Ph.D., professor of political science at Holy Cross College.  We'll look at the article in its entirety; it's only two pages but rich in thought. It's called "Another Tool Against Terror:  Revisiting the Ban on Assassination".

" Bright-Sided:
How the Endless Promotion of Positive Thinking has Undermined America "

This Sunday we will watch a 10-minute video of journalist, political activist, and author of Bright-Sided: How the Endless Promotion of Positive Thinking has Undermined America, Barbara Ehrenreich talking about the darker side of positive thinking.  The video features Ehrenreich narrating as an illustrator sketches and takes notes on her summary of Bright-Sided.

We will watch the video, and then following some prepared remarks by Leader Bob Greenwell, we will spend the rest of our time together discussing the negative consequences when positive thinking clashes with realism.

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
   " Poetry in My Life"

Share a poem, or just listen to others who bring one to share.  It may be a poem you wrote yesterday or when you were 5 or 15 or 50, or a poem that someone else wrote that affected you.

Does a poem put you into a different state of mind? If you write one, do you go into a different state of mind?  What is your trick for going into that state of mind?  How is it different for you from your ordinary state of mind?  Does it help you get in touch with a better or deeper ethical state of mind?  Does it have only recreational value and no real practical value?  We may have quite different experiences when it comes to poetry!

Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Religion, Sex, and Rock 'n' Roll"

Our speaker is Leader Bob Greenwell.

New thoughts on religion have occurred to me as I've prepared to teach my class on Eastern religions, and I'd like to share these new perspectives with you.  Humanity has separated itself, in a process lasting thousands of years, from nature.  This includes a separation of one's mind from one's own body, and this is chronically stressful.  It also includes a loss of understanding of the need for play in adult human experience.  Traditional religions sometimes offer ways to re-unite the whole self, but just as often make the separation worse.

Sex is a reminder to us that reunion of self in a body experience is a great pleasure.  Rock 'n' Roll, by being such an earthy form of music, can also bring mind and body back together.  (Dance can too.  Gardening can too in a subtler way.)

My reflections will touch on how religion came to justify the separation of mind from body through devaluing play and through degrading the body while glorifying ‘transcendent’ concepts.

The general public is invited.

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
   "Cutting Corners to Gain Something"

Or:  "Don't I Do the Same Thing as BP Sometimes?"

One of the oil companies (maybe BP) actually admitted the other day that it did not engage in certain safety precautions because the government did not require it.  Is that a good enough reason?  How much safety is required by ethics?

What's your experience when you cut corners to get something done?  (I'm assuming we all do it on occasion.)  There's a saying that covers over this practice:  "Act first, apologize later".  That is, Don't ask for permission first, apologize later for having broken protocol.

Here's a link to a very short (under 2 minutes) interview on PBS with a professional ethicist: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/religionandethics/episodes/july-9-2010/gulf-oil-spill-ethics/6634/

I also found a chapter in Dobrin's Ethics for Everyone which might be applied to the topic, if we find it useful to crack open the book.  It's called "Should I Compete against Friends?"  We could apply the thoughts in the chapter to BP as competing against its friends who are all the people who live in the environment affected by oil spills.  BP: "I gain profit, you bear the cost".

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
"Is it ever ethical to walk away from a mortgage?"

There is a current trend, in these hard economic times, for people to walk away from their mortgages, default on their loans, tell the bank "Go ahead, foreclose".  There are organizations that promote this action, and help you to do it.

Most of these people are "under water".  That is, their homes are worth less than the amount they owe on them.  Some of these people can afford to continue to make their mortgage payments, but simply choose not to, arguing that it's a bad business deal for them.

But is it ethical?

There are many good places online to investigate this.  Here's a good one:  60 Minutes did this segment recently.
