Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
   "Peter Joseph & Civilization"

Peter Joseph believes we as a civilization must change or die.  He believes we cannot continue to consume at our current rate and expect to still have a planet that can sustain life.  He predicts another world war, this time between China and the U.S., based on scarcity of resources (primarily fossil fuels) and our projected inability to pay China what we owe them.  He calls for the shedding of religious notions and the dismantling of our monetary system, which is from his perspective the root of all evil.  Without radical change, Peter Joseph says our planet is doomed.

Let’s first talk about whether we agree with Peter Joseph.  Then let’s discuss whether we think there is hope to slow or reverse what he and many others see as our planet’s collision course.  Third, let’s decide if there is any way we can personally or collectively participate in the progress toward a more sustainable, sane world.

Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.
If you wish, you may RSVP Mr. Bob Greenwell by email.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Who Is Peter Joseph?"

We will view a 40-minute documentary called "Who Is Peter Joseph" about the founder of the Zeitgeist Movement.  A discussion will follow.

Some of our members have seen Zeitgeist: The Movie, and they rave about it.  The film is two hours long, so we can’t watch it on a Sunday morning, but we can watch the documentary that explores Peter Joseph’s background, philosophy, and motivation for creating the film and starting the movement.  This man is an amazing freethinker with ideas that are both radical and rational.

You may want to read this excellent article, "The Zeitgeist Movement: Envisioning a Sustainable Future", by Travis Walter Donovan from Huffington Post in March of this year.  It provides a solid context for the documentary we will watch.

If you’re so inclined, you can watch the original 2007 film and/or the 2008 Addendum here: http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com (Don’t worry if you can hear the voice but see nothing for the first few minutes.  It’s meant to be that way.)

The general public is invited.

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
"Bring out the best, but how?"

Motivation is one key.  Say I want to motivate my kids to do something.  Do I reward them, punish them?  How and how much?

Maybe I want to bring out the best in my spouse, friend, boss, employee.  How do I tie some incentive to some behavior that will be them at their best?  Say I want to bring out the best in Ethical Society members?  What kind of incentive would do it?

We will start this meeting 15 minutes late.  Socialize 7:15 pm, discussion 7:30.  Why?  Because I'm giving you a ten-minute homework assignment.

Click on this You Tube Link and watch.  I guarantee you will be mesmerized!  It's only ten minutes.  Then come to LED and enjoy.

Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.

Sunday Special Presentation

"Rich Media, Poor Democracy."

We will be viewing the Rich Media, Poor Democracy 30 minute video. Following, at about 11:45 AM, we will have a group Question & Answer period.

From the Media Education Foundation's web site, there is this description:

"Through numerous examples, McChesney, and media scholar, Mark Crispin Miller, demonstrate how journalism has been compromised by the corporate bosses of conglomerates such as Disney, Sony, Viacom, News Corp, and AOL Time Warner to produce a system of news that is high on sensationalism and low on information.  They suggest that unless citizen activism can reclaim the commons, this new corporate system will be characterized by a rich media and an ever impoverished, poor democracy."

The general public is invited.

the topic is:
   "Fair Trade"

Not long ago on a Sunday we heard Kellee Sikes tell us about "Fair Trade"."  It was very moving.  Where our money goes after we buy something makes a difference.  How can we buy in a way that helps people who make what we buy, instead of keeping them stuck in poverty and misery?

We meet at Sara Schneider's home this Wednesday, and Sara will share some of the discoveries she's made.  Let's discuss everything we buy.  I bought a new cell phone recently.  I bought a big bucket of fried chicken for my overnight guests.  We live in a sea of money.  What can we learn about it?  How difficult has it been for you to make purchases that are "fair trade"?

Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
"Refining Our Thoughts and Feelings about Abortion and Contraception"

Our speaker last Sunday was from NARAL and spoke about abortion with a focus on Emergency Contraception.  I received two requests that we make this our topic on Wednesday night.

Most of us have come to settled positions on abortion and contraception.  But is there a way to enlarge our understanding, to get clearer on facts, to gain increased empathy for others?  I believe so.  Abortion is one of the most divisive issues in our country, and we haven't addressed it as a topic for several years.

I found a website that tries to present all possible views on the topic without taking sides itself.  Here are 4 links you might find stimulating about various aspects of it.  They will also lead you to other links, if you are so inclined to pursue them.

the topic is:
"When Doing Good Does No Good"

Let's face up to the dark side of our mission, to bring out the best in others.

Mimi Silbert was a prison counselor and consultant to police departments, probation officers and halfway houses.  She has two Ph.D.'s, one in psychology and one in criminology.  She did what people like her were supposed to do, and she thought she was helping, thought she was doing good, and felt good about it.

Then, after years of experience, she underwent two shifts in attitude.

Have you ever tried to do some good for someone and it didn't seem to help at all?  Did you ever rebel against someone who was trying to influence you to be a better person?  How strong is this "dark side" of our mission?

Sunday Lecture Series

"The Incredible Story of Mimi Silbert:
Turning Thugs into Their Own Best Selves"

In 1971 Mimi Silbert founded Delancey Street with four residents, a thousand dollar loan and a dream.  She envisioned a place where substance abusers, former felons and others who had hit bottom would, through their own efforts, be able to turn their lives around.

Since those early days in a single house, Mimi Silbert has empowered more than 14,000 people to lead crime-free, drug-free lives in mainstream society.  They have acquired skills, they attend college and they are part of the workforce.

This Sunday, our leader, Bob Greenwell will tell Mimi's story.

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
"Should I Stop Someone From Hurting Himself or Herself?"

We are currently exploring up-close, everyday ethical dilemmas.  There is nothing like this for sharpening ethical sensitivity.

This week we'll explore the question "Should I Stop Someone From Hurting Himself or Herself?"  (We were going to do this last week but the group went another direction instead, talking about Mexico in light of the prior Sunday speaker John Ross.)

Think of the various kinds of ways in which people do harm to themselves.  When should I intervene?  When not?  Think of your own needs.  When would intervening do harm to yourself?

After ferreting out various aspects of this everyday dilemma (and being surprised how much we stretch each others' awareness and imaginations!), we'll glance at the section in the book Ethics for Everyone to see how Arthur Dobrin approaches the same question.  We'll note where we thought of something he did not, or where a perspective of his changes some of ours.

Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.

Our guest speaker is author John Ross.

From his web site ( johnross-rebeljournalist.com ): "John Ross has written eight books of fiction and non-fiction.  Murdered By Capitalism (Nation Books 2004) is partially a personal history of 40 years on the barricades of the Americas north and south, and partially the strange story of the U. S. Left during the past century and a half.

'Murdered By Capitalism is a rip-snorting and honorable account of an outlaw tradition in American politics which too seldom gets past the bouncers at the gates of our national narrative' wrote reclusive novelist Thomas Pynchon of the work."
