from Time magazine:

"Aides caution that he will neither demand a so-called public-health-insurance option nor abandon his desire to see one achieved.  He will not give up his quest for a bipartisan compromise in the Senate, nor will he vow to abandon the possible use of parliamentary procedures that would allow Democrats to pass major portions of reform with just 51 Senate votes."

Book cover

"The Murder of Roger Ackroyd"
     by Agatha Christie

"Dr. Sheppard has no idea his finicky, foreign neighbor is actually retired detective Hercule Poirot.  When wealthy Roger Ackroyd is found brutally murdered, Poirot can’t resist stepping in to sort out clues and find the killer.  This third Poirot mystery has all the author’s trademark touches — a pithy portrait of English village life, a cast of unforgettable characters, and a plot of Byzantine complexity.  Due to its shocking twist ending, the book remains one of the most controversial mysteries ever written. Book cover

"The Year of Living Biblically:
One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible
      as Literally as Possible"
by A. J. Jacobs

"Raised in a secular family but increasingly interested in the relevance of faith in our modern world, A.J. Jacobs decides to dive in headfirst and attempt to obey the Bible as literally as possible for one full year.  He vows to follow the Ten Commandments.  To be fruitful and multiply.  To love his neighbor.  But also to obey the hundreds of less publicized rules: to avoid wearing clothes made of mixed fibers; to play a ten-string harp; to stone adulterers.

The resulting spiritual journey is at once funny and profound, reverent and irreverent, personal and universal and will make you see history's most influential book with new eyes." -- review by ChristianBook.com

Public Forum

"Morality Over Religion"

Most people presume morality comes from religion.  If that were so, how would you ever tell a good religion from a bad one, an immoral one from a moral one?

The Ethical Society will present a Forum on Monday, July 20, 2009, 7:00-8:30 pm, at the Non-Profit Development Center (behind Spencer Rd Library), 425 Spencer Rd, St. Peters MO 63376.  The Forum will present Liz Reckker, Coordinator of Children’s Education at the Society, with an opening personal story.  Then Bob Greenwell, Leader in the American Ethical Union, will present the argument for a movement to place morality over religion, worldwide.  Then Rachel Douchant, Ph.D., Lindenwood Professor of Philosophy, will present a critique intended to provoke clarification and discussion.  There will then be Q&A from the audience.

Childcare will be provided.   Cookies and beverage will be provided.

The general public is invited.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Why Dred Scott Matters Today"

Lynne M. Jackson, great-great-granddaughter of Dred and Harriet Scott, will be speaking at the Ethical Society Mid Rivers on Sunday, July 19.  She represents the Dred Scott Heritage Foundation, and will speak about one of the most important cases ever tried in the United States, which was heard in St. Louis' Old Courthouse.  The Supreme Court decided the case in 1857, which hastened the start of the Civil War.

The general public is invited.

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
   "Freedom of Speech/Expresssion"

Greetings!

Since we haven't had a Sunday lecture for a couple of weeks I (host Dee) have chosen our topic of the week.  Last Monday there was an article in the Post-Dispatch about the city of Maplewood being sued by the ACLU over their passage of a law aimed at the Westboro Baptist Church who makes it a mission to protest against homosexuality at funerals of soldiers.  Tony Rothert, the legal director of the ACLU of Eastern Missouri says the "Maplewood's (law) is worse than most of the ordinances and worse than the state statute." This is because the protest exclusion zone is wider and lasts longer.

We can agree in the importance of having a right to free speech, but what about using it to promote hatred?  How far should their rights extend?  What about the rights of a group to hold a funeral in peace?  How about the rights of the gay person to live a life without being maligned?  Ethical issues abound around this topic.

Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.
If you wish, you may RSVP Mr. Bob Greenwell by email.

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
   "If"

If the people of the world got together (in a 100 years, in 500 years) and agreed to direct their interactions with one another by the guiding principle of morality over religion (and over ideology), how would life be different?  By "agree with one another", I mean really agree.  Agree in the same way and to the same degree as the new nation called the United States agreed to make the constitution their supreme law.  The constitution over all other laws.  Morality over religion.

If people of the world agreed, how would life be different?

Would theocracies be possible?

Would moral systems based on dogmas be possible?

Examples from today:  Iran, a theocracy, putting down the people's protest against sham elections.  Dr. Tiller and others like him, being murdered by people whose conviction that abortion is murder was a conviction based on a religious interpretation of life in the womb. The economy, based on a single narrow bottom line (a radical ideology of me-first competition). The environment, subordinated to narrow economic interests. My feeling is that the world gives religious morality and ideological morality too much weight.  They have passion behind them, and that leads us to suppose there must be some real value in them.  The world hardly even knows how to imagine morality in its own right.  Simple basic goodness.

I'm only asking, how would the world be different, if people reached such an agreement.  I'm not asking if such a thing is possible.  If you want to veer into that, you can.  But it certainly will never be possible if people don't start envisioning what it would be like.

Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.
If you wish, you may RSVP Mr. Bob Greenwell by email.
