Sunday Lecture Series

"Power Down Party"

Our guest speaker this Sunday is Craig Smith, owner of a private home building company, is certified as an Energy Star Builder, is an active student of conservation, and is a member of Ethical Society - Mid Rivers.

The full title of this presentation is "Journeying Back to the Future and Relearning How to Party Like It’s 1959, or How I Cut My Electrical Consumption in Half and Found Time to Pick Up My Guitar Again."

He will compare 2008 with 1959.  Per capita energy consumption in 2008 is scary compared to 1959, but at the same time, 2008 has technological gifts that give much greater efficiency over 1959.  Missouri, meanwhile, will soon be on the wrong end of a carbon tax as most of its power is from coal-fired powerplants.

The general public is invited.

Pot Luck Dinner

Super-Duper, Extra Special Potluck -- "A Taste of Mid-Rivers"
(Ethical Society - Mid Rivers, that is!)

Most of you know that we members of the Society pooled our very best home recipes and created & published our own big cookbook.  (We have a reputation as putting on great potlucks.)  So we've decided to have a special potluck featuring dishes from our cookbook!

Members, please make a dish using one of the recipes in our ESMR cookbook.  It doesn't have to be one that you have contributed yourself.  If you don't have our cookbook, borrow one from a friend (there are plenty out there) ... or you can purchase one of the few remaining copies at the Society.

Of course, it's our potluck rule that if you don't have time to make anything that's fine.  We want you there.  We'll have plenty of food for everyone.

Please tell Dee Meyer what you're planning to bring.  She agreed to coordinate the dishes to be sure we have a nice variety for this special holiday potluck.  Dee: meyer.dee.roy@centurytel.net 636-561-2293

This will also be an excellent opportunity to purchase some of the cookbooks to use as gifts for friends over the holidays!!!

The general public is invited.

Sunday Lecture Series

"I Want What I Want and I Want It Now"

Our guest speaker this Sunday is Ms. Kathy Ratino, adjunct professor of communication.  She muses on today’s "hot pocket culture".  By "hot pocket culture" she means a culture that is very short-term oriented.  It’s all about not waiting.  Compare to some other cultures in the world that are oriented to the long term.  The contrasts can be startling, telling, and amusing.  What values, good and bad, are revealed by this American attitude?

Ms. Ratino serves on the Society Council of Ethical Society Mid Rivers.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Life in an Eco-Village"

Our guest speaker this Sunday is Kate Lovelady, Leader of the St. Louis Ethical Society.

Kate and her partner Bill spent a week at Dancing Rabbit, an "eco-village" in northeast Missouri.  They were curious to find out what exactly an eco-village is and what eco-villagers are like, and Kate is ready to tell of her experience and reflections.

Kate puts herself in the category of many people today who are looking for new ways of living that are more ecologically sustainable and energy-independent; who hope for closer ties with neighbors and a deeper sense of community; who want to get away from the processed American diet that's making us fat and sick; and who are asking, What is the "good life" really? Does Dancing Rabbit hold all the answers, or maybe some hints of some?

The general public is invited.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Christianity – An Outsider’s View"

What does Christianity look like to an outside observer?  Bob Greenwell, humanist, philosopher, Siddha Yoga learner, Zen enthusiast, depth-oriented brief therapy trainee, and Ethical Society Leader, takes a look and shares his observations.

Christianity is the religion with the largest number of adherents in the world today.  What caught the imagination of the people of Israel, and then of the Roman Empire, to cause this movement to grow to worldwide proportions?  Mr. Greenwell seeks to avoid trite iconoclasms and to find beauty in every religion he examines.

The general public is invited.

"The Democratic Promise: Saul Alinsky & His Legacy"

Did Barack Obama learn some of Alinsky's methods?  He learned his craft from people in Chicago who were directly trained by Alinsky.  Alinsky targeted commercial, corporate, and governmental culprits who were somehow causing or abetting injustice in the world.  He invented ways to bring actual power to the people.  He taught the famous Ten Rules for Radicals.

FYI, here are 3 mini-reviews:

"A powerful and revelatory documentary on one of the pioneers of grassroots organizing.... It could never be more timely than now." -- Studs Terkel

"At a time when community activism is needed more than ever, this film will give both guidance to organizers and inspiration to young people wanting to advance the cause of justice and equality.  The experience of the extraordinary Saul Alinsky can instruct us all, and we are fortunate that it has been captured so engagingly in this film." -- Howard Zinn, author, A People's History of the United States

"Alinsky's message was simple:  The heart of democratic government lies not in court decisions, party conventions, or costly TV messages, but in the organized struggles of ordinary people.  By showing how people organized in their own interests from the 1930s to the present, this film points the way to resuscitating democracy in our own times." -- David Montgomery, Prof. of History, Yale Univ.

"The Right to Bear Arms"

A recent Supreme Court decision has tilted the meaning of the Second Amendment.  The Justices ruled that the right to bear arms applies to individual persons, not just to militias.

Our guest speaker, Professor Paul Roesler, will explore the setting of the Second Amendment at the time it was adopted by the founding states, how it has been interpreted through the centuries, and what the implications of the recent decision are.  Professor Roesler is Professor of Political Science at St. Charles Community College.  He teaches American Government, Middle East Politics, and other international classes.

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
"Ethical Capitalism - Minimum Wage and Other Illustrations"

Alan Easton, our speaker on Sunday last, presented a favorable view of capitalism and the creation of wealth.  Alan, a member of the St. Louis Ethical Society, is invited to attend this Wednesday, and most likely will be able to attend.  Let me set the stage for you, as best I can.

Alan has coined the term, "law-regulated market"; and this is preferable to a purely free or unfettered market.  Laws are needed to enforce contracts, for example, or to provide for legal claims of ownership.

But within the laws, the best results seem to accrue when markets themselves are allowed to set prices for things and set salaries and wages.  Furthermore, Alan offered, the ethical value of economic practices mostly (or perhaps fully) comes from the consequences of the economic practices.

Alan believes that in the case of minimum wage, for example, the consequence of legally imposing a minimum wage (rather than letting the market set all wages) are actually worse for the poor... in the long run.

One way of putting this is that there is more wisdom in the market (which reflects the choices of everyone who hires or is hired) than there is in the heads of a dozen or so brilliant and compassionate thinkers.

Remember the purpose of LED (Living Ethics Discussion):  Not to argue, not to win a point, not to reach consensus on an issue, but for each of us to take in new perspectives on an issue, and for each to us to grow in ethical sensitivity and regard for one another.  Some of us may feel passionately about an issue, for example, minimum wage, or something else that comes up, so we have to remember our purpose for gathering.  Give safe and welcome space to all who come, and make room for each to speak and tell her or his experience.

Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Wealth Creation – An Ethical Imperative?"

Our speaker, a member of the Ethical Society of St. Louis, believes that a limit to one’s ethics is the amount of wealth one has.  The more bounty one has, the more good works may be done with it.

Yet there is a reluctance to praise wealth and wealth creation, while generosity is lavishly praised.  In fact, with the exception of philanthropy, many people think that the exchange of money drains any activity of its ethical content.  Phrases such as "the evils of capitalism" and "corporate greed" are bandied about.

Our speaker will drill deep into these issues and show how an ethical dimension to wealth may be revealed.

The general public is invited.

"Voting and Nonviolent Resistance to Evil"

To change things, Americans vote.  Implicitly, Americans say, "We believe in nonviolence."  To change rulers, we don’t have to rise up in arms.  We don’t need a coup d’etat.  We vote.

Mr. Greenwell will reflect on the significance of the vote as setting the American mindset.  Its full significance has not yet been realized.  That is, Americans do not yet realize, and therefore do not yet practice, a truly effective nonviolent approach to settling differences.

Mr. Greenwell will reflect on Jesus’s counsel to "Resist not evil" and on the modern movement of Nonviolent Communication.  Nonviolence does not mean to submit to oppression.

Sunday Lecture Series

"The Stolen Election of 2004"

Our guest speaker will be Richard Hayes Phillips, Ph.D.  He is author of the book Witness to a Crime. This book sets forth the results of his multi-year investigation of the voting problems in Ohio for the 2004 Presidential election.

Robert Kennedy Jr says: "This landmark investigation is a testament to what private citizens can accomplish when government officials fail to protect our right to vote and to count those votes as cast.  Every American – Republican and Democrat – should read this book, and join the fight for democracy’s most fundamental right."

Richard Hayes Phillips, Ph.D., has been the leading investigator of this election.  His work was relied upon by John Conyers in challenging the Ohio electors in Congress, by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. in his article for Rolling Stone magazine, and by Justice Algenon L. Marbley in issuing his federal court order protecting the ballots from destruction.  Assisted by teams of volunteers equipped with digital cameras, Phillips amassed some 30,000 images of forensic evidence.  Then he undertook the multi-year analysis, examining 126,000 ballots, 127 poll books, and 141 voter signature books from 18 counties.  All the results are laid out in his new book.

His conclusion: the 2004 presidential election in Ohio, the state that decided the election, was rigged.

Friday Nite Free Film Series

  "Freedom Writers"

Get ready for our film this month, a highly reviewed 2007 Paramount film starring Hilary Swank, called Freedom Writers!  It won the 2007 Humanitas Prize.  It's a true, inspiring story of believing in the worth of people, no matter what.

Watch a trailer at this link: http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi3634888985/

The film is set in the 1992 aftermath of the Los Angeles riots.

From the review in the Los Angeles Times:
"As real-life teacher Erin Gruwell, Swank enters with coltish enthusiasm, dangerous naivete and a toothsome smile that suggests maybe she isn't up to the task of turning a classroom full of hardened teens, embittered by their hateful environment, into scholars.  Amid the schematic setup of Gruwell attempting to win the trust of the students while overcoming the red tape of the system, something fairly amazing happens.  Just as Gruwell the teacher starts to regain her balance after a rocky beginning, Swank the actor likewise kicks into gear, shrugging off the impediments of the stereotypical scenario and turning what might have been a routine, entirely forgettable January release into a surprisingly moving experience."

Invitation open to the general public.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Taoism - The Religion of Going With the Flow"

Taoism is a religion of great beauty and appeal.  It teaches "going with the flow" but not in a trivial sense or noncommittal sense.  It blends a kind of skeptical existentialism with a rapturous love of nature and beauty.

The classic text of Taoism is Lao Tzu’s Tao Te Ching, a bestseller in its English translations.  This lecture will explore Taoist teachings and practice.

Does it believe in God?  Does it really work?  Other lectures to come in the series on world religions are Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, with a look at Ethics as a Religion.  Mr. Greenwell will draw upon scholarly resources and personal experience to present an appreciative overview.

For this day only, we will have on display an original statue of Lao Tsu, founder of Taoism.  The beautiful statue was sculpted by a member of the St. Louis Ethical Society.

The general public is invited.

Thanks so much for supporting our last breakfast, and we look forward to seeing you at this one!

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
    "Eventful Times, Ethical Takes"

Due to the significance of current political and economic events, we are letting ourselves talk to each other about whatever is going on.  There may be ventilating of feelings and, perhaps, expressions of dismay.

These exchanges can have a positive purpose, as long as we can hold them in a framework of wondering about the ethics involved and about our own ethical response.

Our task is to focus our minds to bring whatever ethical perspective we can to the situation.

Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.
If you wish, you may RSVP Mr. Bob Greenwell by email.

Sunday Lecture Series

"US Constitution – Current Major Controversies"

The ethics of the Constitution is simple:  Americans have agreed to live by it. Knowing one’s agreements, and keeping them, is a basic part of living ethically.

This lecture will focus on current controversies swirling around the Constitution.  How is the Supreme Court interpreting passages in the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the other amendments?  How much leeway is there for re-interpretation?  The speaker will draw on a variety of resources for understanding the Constitution and the history of how it’s been interpreted, in order to present these in ordinary language, while respecting the opposing views of political and legal camps.

The general public is invited.
