Pot Luck Dinner

It's Pot Luck Sunday!

After the lecture, please stay and join us for lunch.  First-time visitors are invited to attend and bring no food item for the table.  Others: bring a dish, any dish, from soup to salad to sandwich to entree to side dish to dessert.  Bring an item that doesn't require your attention from 11 to noon, since any sound in the kitchen is magnified into the room where our 11:00 a.m. program is in progress.  The oven is available to keep things warm, and a large 'fridge to keep things cool, and there are lots of outlets for crockpots, etc.; and the microwave is available right after the Lecture ends.  Even if you don't bring a dish or beverage, at least bring your appetite!  See you then!

The general public is invited.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Ten Unsolved Mysteries of the Brain"

Discover Magazine last month published an article with the same title.  I will give you snapshots of each of the ten mysteries, and try to draw out larger implications for our lives.

The unsolved mysteries are:

  1. How is information coded?
  2. How are memories stored and retrieved?
  3. What is the baseline activity in the brain for?
  4. How do brains simulate the future?
  5. What are emotions?
  6. What is intelligence?
  7. How is time represented in the brain?
  8. Why do brains sleep and dream?
  9. How do brain subsystems integrate with one another?
  10. What is consciousness.

We especially invite first-time visitors to enjoy lunch on us.  This will be a good Sunday to check out what the Ethical Society means to us and might mean for you.  It's a friendship thing.

The general public is invited.

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
"How have movies influenced your life?"

We want this to be not an "Entertainment Tonight" type of party, but one where we talk about how a movie or movies have changed us, made us think, opened our eyes.  Perhaps you were at a turning point in your life, or were facing a difficult situation, or maybe you were just coasting along just fine and then wham! -- a movie surprises you by inspiring you.  Your experience is bound to be unique.

Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.
If you wish, you may RSVP Mr. Bob Greenwell by email.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Life is Beautiful"

Speaker Bob Greenwell will use the movie of the same title as the springboard to take off on reflections about how our attitude toward life affects what we experience of life.  Is life ever an utter disaster, with no redeeming quality?  It might seem like it sometimes.  Other times not.  Which is the reality?

The general public is invited.

Friday Nite Free Film Series

"Life is Beautiful"   (Vita è bella)

" Offers the possibility of hope in the face of unflinching horror."

Conjuring keys and hats out of thin air, Guido (Roberto Benigni), a clever Jewish-Italian waiter, successfully courts Dora (Nicoletta Braschi), a beautiful local woman, in Fascist pre-WWII Italy.  His life, however, is turned upside down a few years later when he, Dora, and their young son, Giosué (Giorgio Cantarini), are sent to a Nazi concentration camp.  Refusing to give up hope, Guido tries to protect his son's innocence by pretending that their imprisonment is just an elaborate game, with the grand prize being a tank.

The movie made the Cannes Film Festival in 1998, winning the Grand Prize of the Jury.  It then went on to win Academy Awards for Best Music, Original Dramatic Score and Best Foreign Language Film.  Benigni won Best Actor for his role.  The film was additionally nominated for Academy Awards for Directing, Film Editing, Best Picture, and Best Original Screenplay, and is ranked 90th on the Internet Movie Database's list of top 250 rated films as voted by nearly sixty thousand users as of September 2007.

Host:  Dee

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
"Things I Do (or Think or Believe) I'd Rather Keep Private"

Did you know the ACLU is a distant offspring of Ethical Culture?  The founder, Roger Baldwin, taught in outreach programs of the St. Louis Ethical Society as a young man in his 20's, then later went on to create the ACLU.

The ACLU is a great example of the truth that ethical issues sometimes need very fine logical discrimination to get clear.  Recently, ACLU has spoken out in support of Senator Larry Craig (the bathroom man).

Let's look at the ethical questions raised by the sting operation that resulted in arresting Senator Crain in an airport bathroom for soliciting sex.  And let us really look, rather than emotionally react.

From the way the topic is phrased, you can see the intent is to get us to be personal, not abstract, at the same time that we really consider the issues.  Have you ever felt violated when someone went public about some behavior of yours that you didn't think was wrong, or at least wasn't hurting anyone, but that was so intimate that it hurt to be bandied about in public?  Has this happened to someone you personally know?

Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.

Sunday Lecture Series

"When Someone in Your Life Goes"

Someone important in your life goes away, and you know that they are gone for good.  You can see that the direction you have taken and the direction they have gone are paths that will cross no more.  (If they do, you will be genuinely surprised, because you genuinely thought they would not.)

A friend moves to another part of the world and marries into a foreign culture.  A brother or sister changes, or you change relative to them, and the difference is so severe that you plan on never seeing them again, and you grieve and move on.

A parent dies, goes away for good.  The speaker’s father has recently died, and he will talk about his experience and the larger experience of the bittersweet loss of relationships.  Life — and relationships — keep changing.

The general public is invited.

Thank you to Liz, this week's host, for suggesting the topic.  As she wrote, "Since the 6th anniversary of Sept. 11 is this week, I thought maybe we could talk about the significance in our lives of this event; how it changed (if it did) our world view or our sense of personal security; how did it compare to other tragedies in the world we may have witnessed (Kennedy's assasination, the Challenger disaster, Chernobol, Katrina)."

Sunday Lecture Series

"Labor Unions in an Ethical Society"

Paul Winslow is a recently-retired labor activist and leader.  He was an International Vice-President with UNITE, a union that represents garment workers, laundry workers and others.  He has always been a very progressive voice in the labor movement and very committed to a broad vision of the labor movement’s obligation to work for justice for all working people.

Paul lives in St Charles county.  He will cover some of the surprising historical roots of worker organizing in America, speak to what unions actually do (when not on strike), and suggest how labor unions fit into a good society.

Host:  Sara

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
Sustainable Living - An Ethical Imperative - Take Two

Two weeks ago we talked about this.  We all shared and confessed how little we thought we were doing and how little effect we were having.  It was sobering and yet a very, very good discussion, and we wanted to have a followup.  We decided to have it this week when it would be at Sara's house.

To prepare, you might go to green.yahoo.com and check out the ecological impact you are having on the environment by your lifestyle.  Then click on the Take Action tab to find out how much actions you are already taking lowers your impact, and how much other actions would lower your impact.  Thanks to Craig for finding this website.

Hovering over all our actions are the larger ethical questions:  What does sustainable living mean to you?  What kind of actions do you feel called to engage in on behalf of the environment.  How does this call feel ethical to you?  What kind of actions do you feel called toward, but find that you can't go that far yet?  What holds you back? Are there doubts about what's really necessary, what's really helpful?  How do you weigh personal comfort and the call to what appears to be a less comfortable lifestyle?

Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.
If you wish, you may RSVP Mr. Bob Greenwell by email.

Sunday Lecture Series

"The Plateau of Consciousness"

Infancy, childhood, youth, adulthood, and that’s it?  No, because skills can continue to develop.  Goals can continue to broaden.  Personal outlook can continue to expand.  Personal integrity can continue to deepen and strengthen.

In addition, it will be argued, a person’s very state of consciousness can be increasingly raised beyond whatever plateau at which one is currently stationed, however normal or elevated it seems to be.  Aiming higher is not a guarantee of disillusionment and frustration, as long as one also develops the complementary skill of appreciating whatever is.

The general public is invited.

"Our Take on Adler's Challenging Words"

Last Sunday I quoted Adler as saying that the Ethical Movement "must give birth to personalities who have attained for themselves an abiding ethical faith, and are aflame with it."

In your experience, have there been times when you held such a high standard as this and it helped your life?  Have there been times when holding such a high standard did not help or actually hurt your life?   How do we handle such things as being tired, needing a break, or enjoying "what is", rather than seeking a change?  Can we always be aflame, or do we need to soak in water sometimes?

Sunday Lecture Series

"Pitfalls of Positive Thinking"

There are true believers who ascribe everything good in their lives to their cultivation of an optimistic mental outlook, and there are comic parodies that poke fun at the silliness, such as the character Stuart Smiley on Saturday Night Live.

Between them are the tragedies of disillusionment that can occur, but also the real results that science has been able to uncover of generalized optimism.  This lecture will take a realistic look at the perennial American pastime of positive thinking.

The general public is invited.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Stages of Changing for Good"

A multi-year research program at the University of Rhode Island had psychologists study what ordinary people do to pull themselves out of negative routines, whether addictions or just bad habits.  They found that there are stages that lead to success.  The first stage may sound like failure, because it’s all thinking and wishing and no action.  Yet it’s important to know, for one who is in this first stage, that it’s actually a positive stage!  The lecture this Sunday will summarize all five stages, and add ethical commentary in accord with Ethical Society principles.

"Specific Significant Change You've Accomplished in Yourself"

By specific, I mean a new habit you achieved, or an old habit you overcame.  How did you do it?  You may know precisely how you did it and so not regard your accomplishment as noteworthy, because it was just an "of course" to you.  But it would not be an of "course" to most of us.  Or you may not know precisely how you did it.  If you focus on it for a while, however, you can probably come up with at least some vague hints as to how your accomplishment happened.  A vague hint might be all that someone else needs to turn the corner on his or her agonizing effort to bring about some self-change.

"The US Road to Torture"

The US has held a high standard in the world up to recent years.  George Washington, as General of the Continental Army, banned torture, and enemy soldiers and units surrendered more readily, aware of the good treatment they would receive.  What changed?  How did the US come to torture?  Recent investigative reporting in Vanity Fair magazine details the path.  The lecture this Sunday will summarize what has been discovered.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Impeachment: Partisan or Political or Ethical?"

There is increasing talk in the US about impeachment.  The lecture this Sunday is intended to clarify what impeachment is and what it is for.  What is impeachment in the Constitution?  Is it an antiquated device?  Is it a waste of time and taxpayer money?  Is it, given the sour taste from the last impeachment attempt based on a sexual peccadillo, merely a method of partisan attack?

An ethical outlook can help to sort through the tangle.  Efforts to impeach, whether by any Ethical Society members or other groups, must carefully monitor their own efforts to insure that they have the country’s interests in mind, not partisan ones.

The general public is invited.

"The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill"

"This movie could be a surprise underground hit, because it is so warm and so involving."
-- Roger Ebert, EBERT AND ROPER, Two Thumbs Up!

This is a great film, with incredible videography of wild parrots (with striking color and individual personality) who have somehow made the urban setting of San Francisco their home.  And it's a story of a man who has chosen to live a different lifestyle from the norm and the relationship he grew between himself and the wild parrots, and consequently with other people.

Sunday Lecture Series

"America and Rome"

Is America doomed to repeat Rome’s downfall?  First Rome fell from a democratic republic to a dictatorial, military empire.  Then Rome imploded on herself, having lost all moral authority to resist outside forces.

Parallels between Rome and America will be explored, but also differences that could enable America, if she has the moral will, to avoid downfall and fulfill its true promise of being a democratic beacon for the world.  The book Are We Rome? by Cullen Murphy will be drawn upon for these reflections.

The general public is invited.

Living Ethics Discussion

the topic is:
   " Deep Change and Puberty"

Huh?

Well, you had to be there Sunday to hear me explain the deep change that Adler went through that was coincident with and bound to his experience of puberty.  It was when he had his ethical breakthrough insight that stayed with him the rest of his life.  Keep the change - how?  By having your insight at the same time as you have a powerful emotional experience that goes through your entire self.

So, let's explore our own experiences.  What insight or attitude did you adopt during your time of pubertal change?  Has that stayed with you?

Or respond to a broader question:  What insight or attitude did you adopt during a time of powerful emotions and has that stayed with you?

Invitation open to members of the Society and their guests.
If you wish, you may RSVP Mr. Bob Greenwell by email.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Ethical Human Transformation"

Psychiatrist Calvin Chatlos in New York City has developed a potent workshop based on primary principles of Ethical Culture.  (Dr. Chatlos attended Washington University in St. Louis for his collegiate degree, where he discovered Ethical Culture through the St. Louis Ethical Society.)  This workshop is designed to bring people to a transformed state.  This occurs through concepts and exercises that enable them to get what it really means to live by the ethical principle of treating all others as beings of worth and dignity.

Bob Greenwell, trained in psychotherapy, philosophy, and Ethical Culture, will describe the inner workings of this course.  He will also draw on two books by organizational and personal change expert Robert Quinn:  Deep Change: Discovering the Leader Within, and Building the Bridge As You Walk On It: A Guide for Leading Change.  Mr. Greenwell will comment on the need in all people for an ethical human transformation.

The general public is invited.

"What I Learned at the AEU/NLC"

Leader Bob Greenwell will talk about his experiences last week at the National Leaders Council meetings and at the American Ethical Union's national Assembly.

What's inspiring, what's hopeful?  What new ideas were there?  What old ideas but golden?  What kind of mutual vitalization might be able to occur between us (our local Society) and our national organization?

The general public is invited.
