"Beyond Greed:
Reality and Hope for a Moral Economy"
Part Two of the two-part series on Greed
and a Moral Economy
27 February, Sunday at 11:00 AM
Speaker: Bob Greenwell, Leader of the Ethical Society.
Greed reduces personal
quality and social quality, in both the long and short run.
In clearing the mind of myths of greed as good, there begin to
arise glimmers of what could serve instead for a thriving economy,
one that honors the human delight in competition, achievement,
and excellence, and at the same time builds a humane community
of people working together in fairness and respect. The
economic practices and agreements that are presently in place
are not set in stone. They have been chosen, at times blindly
by cultural accidents and forces, at other times by humans standing
in positions of power. A better way is possible--not the
better way of any "ism" like socialism, communism, or
capitalism, but the better way of conscious choice informed by
our own best American ideals.
"The Argument
for Greed, The Desire for Good"
Part One of the two-part series on Greed
and a Moral Economy
20 February, Sunday at 11:00 AM
Speaker: Bob Greenwell, Leader of the Ethical Society.
Greed creates social good,
say those who want a free hand with using the power of their money.
At least in the long run, they say. Well, we have gone for
a long run. We can now look and see. The results are
in. The results are visible to all who will take a moment
to look, not just to professional economists. This talk
will draw on many sources, and particularly a monumental study,
Greed and Good, by Sam Pizzigati. Greed hurts
not just the individual human spirit; it has created a searing
gap in human community.
