Pot Luck Dinner

It's Pot Luck Sunday on New Year's Eve!

After the lecture, please stay and join us for lunch.  First-time visitors are invited to attend and bring no food item for the table.  Ethical Society of St. Louis members, the option is certainly your own.  Others: bring a dish, any dish, from soup to salad to sandwich to entree to side dish to dessert.  Bring an item that doesn't require your attention from 11 to noon, since any sound in the kitchen is magnified into the room where our 11:00 a.m. program is in progress.  The oven is available to keep things warm, and a large 'fridge to keep things cool, and there are lots of outlets for crockpots, etc.; and the microwave is available right after the Lecture ends.  Even if you don't bring a dish or beverage, at least bring your appetite!  See you then!

The general public is invited.

Sunday Lecture Series

Introducing a Three-Part Series...

"Crossroads for The Ethical Movement"
"Part I: Religious Differences Drive People Apart"

Rooting for different sports teams brings people together.  Religious differences drive people apart.  What irony!  Religion, which should be for the greater fellowship of all, ends by turning group against group.  What is the answer to this age-old conundrum?  Is progress possible?  It would not do to simply give up.  What, beyond religion (at least as has been known up to know), may start to release real human potential for cooperative paths to peace, justice, and support for each unique individual?  In this light, the Ethical Movement experiment will be described in its origins.

Members of the Ethical Society of St. Louis are especially invited to join us this Sunday, since they are closing for the New Year's holiday.

The general public is invited.

"Messages From My Father"
    by Calvin Trillin

Calvin Trillin, the celebrated New Yorker writer, offers a rich and engaging biography of his father, as well as a literate and entertaining fanfare for the common (and decent, and hard-working) man.

Abe Trillin had the western Missouri accent of someone who had grown up in St. Joseph and the dreams of America of someone who had been born in Russia.  In Kansas City, he was a grocer, at least until he swore off the grocery business.  He was given to swearing off things—coffee, tobacco, alcohol, all neckties that were not yellow in color.  Presumably he had also sworn off swearing, although he was a collector of curses, such as "May you have an injury that is not covered by workman's compensation."  Although he had a strong vision of the sort of person he wanted his son to be, his explicit advice about how to behave didn't go beyond an almost lackadaisical "You might as well be a mensch."  Somehow, though, Abe Trillin's messages got through clearly.

The author's unerring sense of the American character is everywhere apparent in this quietly powerful memoir.

"Communicating Love in a Meaningful Way"

Our guest speaker will be Kathy Ratino, ESMR member and a member of the Society Council.

Words are for communication yet ironically often miscommunicate.  Instinct fails.  Those who are loved feel unloved.  Relationships lose their zest, turn flat, or cause distress.  Drawing on the book The Five Love Languages, Ms. Ratino will set forth practical advice on communicating love in a way that will be felt by those who are loved.

She has taught a variety of college communication courses, and held positions in corporations as a writer, standup trainer, and communications project manager.  She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education and a Master's Degree in Interpersonal and Public Communication.

"What Looks Like a Crazy on an Ordinary Day"
    by Pearl Cleage

In a remarkable debut novel that sizzles with sensuality, crackles with life-affirming energy and moves the reader to laughter and tears, author Pearl Cleage creates a world rich in character, human drama, and deep, compassionate understanding.  After a decade of luxe living in Atlanta, Ava Johnson has returned to tiny Idlewild, Michigan -- her fabulous career and power plans smashed to bits on one dark truth: Ava has tested positive for HIV.  But rather than a sorrowful end, her homecoming is a new beginning.  Because, in the ten-plus years since she left, all the problems of the big city have invaded the sleepy community of her childhood... because dear friends and family sorely need her help in the face of impending trouble and tragedy, and Ava cannot turn her back on them.  And because, most importantly, Ava Johnson is inexplicabley and undeniably falling in love.

Sunday Lecture Series

"Spirituality as Infinite Interrelatedness"

Our Guest Speaker will be the young & dynamic Leader of the Ethical Society of St. Louis, Kate Lovelady.

Ethical Culture’s assertion of universal human worth grew out of a long discussion in philosophy about human nature:  How are we different from other animals?  Are we more than material beings?  On what can we ground our beliefs in worth and dignity and human rights?  The founder, Felix Adler, came to define spirituality as awareness of our "infinite interrelatedness."  His struggle with these issues will lead us to perhaps the hardest question in ethics: What is our ethical responsibility to others?  How do we live with that sense of responsibility and use it to inspire us?

The general public is invited.

"A New Ethics Movement"

Our speaker will be MidRivers Ethical Society leader Mr. Robert Greenwell.

Is a new Ethics Movement possible in our country?  In our county?  If so, it would have to be not a movement of duty, not a regime of repression.  Rather it would have to be a movement of commitment inspired by a vision of joy and cooperation among people.  It would have to political and personal, philosophical and religious, individual and social all at once.   As philosophical, it would have to be practical philosophy.  As religious, it would have to unite rather than divide people of different beliefs.  As political, it would not contend in the arena of party versus party but would hold political representatives accountable to a higher standard.  As personal, it would give people the motivation to develop their own code of ethics, making it the spine of their character.  Such will be the kind of reflections explored in this lecture.

The general public is invited.

  "The Social Responsibility of Business"

As the head of the pharmaceutical giant Merck from 1985 to 1994, P. Roy Vagelos led the company through an unprecedented period of drug discovery and financial success.  Combining his medical research background and his much-heralded leadership of a firm that was voted "the most admired company in the U.S", seven times during his tenure, he is among the few who can prove that good business and a social conscience are not only compatible, but are strongly linked.

Vagelos' talk will be followed by a panel of Washington University-associated business experts, including Mahendra Gupta, Dean and Geraldine J. and Robert L. Virgil Professor of Accounting and Management in the Olin School of Business; Judi McLean Parks, Reuben C. and Anne Carpenter Taylor Professor of Organizational Behavior in the Olin School of Business, and Philip Needleman, former chief scientist of Monsanto/Searle and former head of the department of pharmacology at the School of Medicine.  A question-and-answer session will follow, and the event will conclude with a reception in Holmes Lounge.

ELECTION DAY

It is our civic duty.

As this all-important day approaches, frequently check for updates in the County websites linked below for registration information, absentee ballot information, and the actual ballots.

Election Hotlines

  • National Election Protection hotline: 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683).
This appears to be the best.  See note about this below.
  • MO Secretary of State hotline: 800-NOW-VOTE (800-669-8683)
  • US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of MO: 314-539-7733
  • Democratic National Committee: 888-DEM-VOTE (800-336-8683)
  • Republican National Committee: No hotline number found, but their main number is 202-863-8500
  • St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Nicholas Pistor 314-340-8251 or npistor@post-dispatch

Note on the Election Protection hotline:
Check their website www.866OurVote.org.  Also I (Bob Greenwell) received a note from Murray Underwood who is a member of the St. Louis Society and is also on the Board of the ACLU.  He forwarded an email from Scott Granneman about Election Protection in our area, including a call for volunteers.  Here's Scott's message:
"If you have ANY problems with ANY aspect of voting on Tuesday, IMMEDIATELY call the non-partisan Election Protection Hotline at 1-866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683).  My wife Denise is overseeing the Missouri Election Protection efforts, and she has assembled a non-partisan group of volunteers, attorneys, and others who stand ready to assist you on election day.  The hotline is available for the ENTIRE STATE of Missouri, so no matter where you are on election day, call 866-687-8683 if you find ANY issues or problems.  Program that number into your cell phones just in case you need it, although we hope you won't.

"In fact, the St. Louis and Kansas City Election Protection efforts are still seeking volunteers for this Tuesday to help distribute voting rights information to voters, to help field calls at our command center, to help give rides, or to provide other administrative or technical assistance at the command center.  If you can help in ANY way, please email Denise Lieberman at denise@deniselieberman.com or call her cell at 314-780-1833 & let her know when you are available."
"Let's all hope for an election on Tuesday that has great turnout and no problems!

Book Overview

"Loving What Is"
...A Book’s Revolutionary Way to Live

Self-actualization is back!  A modern-day guru, Byron Katie, home-grown in a desert town of California, has arisen and revitalized the human hope of personal joy and purpose in life.  She, yes it’s a she, does not claim divine energy or miraculous powers, but gives people a tool—how to ask questions of one’s own thoughts—that seems to release them to durable personal peace and love.  Socrates would be proud.  Bob Greenwell will present an overview of the book, and those present will explore the possibility of starting a "Loving What Is" group, free of any philosophy, teachings, or pressure.

Invitation open to the general public.

"Three Weeks with My Brother"
    by Nicholas Sparks

Who wouldn't want to go on a trip around the world?  When best-selling novelist Sparks receives a travel brochure from his alma mater, Notre Dame, he thinks, "If not now, then when?" and asks his brother to join him.  As they journey to faraway places, the brothers reminisce about their unusual childhood.  Instead of the idealistic life readers may imagine, their early years were marked by poverty, although redeemed by their mother's great love.  A must-read for Sparks fans as well as a treat for those who want to find out what makes a family strong.  © 2004 Booklist Reviews

The general public is invited.
